Starsky and Hutch was a popular American television series from the 1970s consisting of 92 regular 48-minute episodes and one 90-minute pilot episode, created by Alberto and team between 30 April 1975 and May 15, 1979 on ABC. It was directed by Jack Starrett (under the name of Claude Ennis Starrett Jr.), who then directed The Dukes of Hazzard (1979), a somewhat similar series.
The protagonists were two Californian police officers, the dark and stocky David Starsky and the blond Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson being a more intellectual type of police. They were known for driving a fast and distinctive Ford Torino, painted red with a long white stripe, owned by Starsky (Hutch owns an old car and sometimes refers to Starsky's car as "striped tomato"). His boss was Captain Harold Dobey, and his "underworld" contact was an extravagant black man nicknamed Huggy Bear.
In 1977, growing concern about violence on television forced writers to cut action scenes in exchange for more romantic developments. This contributed to the drop in popularity of the series, which two years later would be canceled.
A quarter century after he left television, the series was the inspiration for the 2004 film Starsky & Hutch, starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, as well as Carmen Electra and rapper Snoop Dogg playing Huggy Bear.
